Vijaya Ekadashi

About Vijaya Ekadashi :

Vijaya Ekadashi is a Hindu holy day celebrated on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon phase) in the Hindu Calendar month Magh or Falgun (as per North Indian Calendar) which in the Gregorian calendar falls in February or March.

Vijaya Ekadashi is a highly auspicious day dedicated to worship of Lord Rama – avatar of Lord Vishnu to get rid of all your sins and to achieve success or victory.

The name of the Ekadashi, “Vijaya” itself means success or victory. It is believed that Lord Rama observed Vijaya Ekadashi before he crossed the ocean to reach Lanka and defeat Ravana.

Vijaya Ekadashi Story / Vrat Katha :

According to Legends, when Lord Rama along with his brother Lakshman failed in searching the means to cross the ocean and reach Lanka, they approached sage Bakadalabhya who lived nearby in an ashram to find an answer to their problem.

Sage Bakadalabhya welcomed Lord Rama and Lakshman, heard their problem and suggested Lord Rama to observe Vijaya Ekadashi in order to get rid of all the obstacles and be victorious in all their efforts.

As suggested by sage Bakadalabhya, Lord Rama observed Vijaya Ekadashi Vrat and then found a way to cross the ocean and he later was successful in killing demon Ravana. Since then, the fast of Vijaya Ekadashi is observed with utmost zeal and enthusiasm.

Vijaya Ekadashi Puja Vidhi :

The Puja Vidhi performed during Vijaya Ekadashi is similar to that followed during other Ekadashi’s. On this day Lord Rama – avatar of Lord Vishnu is worshipped.

On this day people observe a strict fast which is broken on the next day during the parana time. Those who are unable to keep a whole day fast keep a partial fast consuming fruits and milk and avoid eating rice and other grains for the whole day.

Vijaya Ekadashi Mantra :

On occasion of Vijaya Ekadashi, you can chant Rama Taraka Mantra – “Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram” or you can chant Rama Moola Mantra – “Om Shri Ramaya Namah”
