Saphala Ekadashi 2017

Saphala Ekadashi

About Saphala Ekadashi :

Saphala Ekadashi is a Hindu holy day celebrated on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon phase) in the Hindu Calendar month Margashirsha (as per Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu and Kannada Calendar) or Paush (as per North Indian Calendar) which in the Gregorian calendar falls in November or December.

As the name indicates, Saphala Ekadashi is a highly auspicious day dedicated to worship of Lord Vishnu in order to become successful in life. Keeping fast on this Ekadashi also helps in getting rid of all your sins and problems.

Saphala Ekadashi Story / Vrat Katha :

According to legends, once upon a time there was a noble king who had four sons. One of his son’s name was Lumbaka.

Lumbaka never believed in Lord Vishnu and always used to question authority of Lord Vishnu. The king, who was devotee of Lord Vishnu, many times tried to explain his son but he never understood. Eventually due to this attitude of his towards Lord Vishnu, Lumbaka was exiled.

Lumbaka continued with his behavior and started plundering the wealth of poor villagers and made his home under a banyan tree. He started killing animals and ate raw meat.

One day he fell very ill and as a result did not have any energy to go for hunting animals for food. Forcefully he had to fast and because of illness he could not sleep that night. Incidentally that day was Saphala Ekadashi and he had unknowingly undertaken the Safala Ekadasi Vrat.

Next Day in morning his health improved and soon Lord Vishnu gave him darshan and explained him that his health improved as he had undertaken the Saphala Ekadashi vrata. That’s not all Lord Vishnu also told him that all the sins committed by him so far have also been vanished. Lumbaka realized his mistake and importance of Lord Vishnu. He returned to his father and lived a happy life thereafter.

Saphala Ekadashi Puja Vidhi :

The Puja Vidhi performed during Saphala Ekadashi is similar to that followed during other Ekadashi’s.

On the day of Saphala Ekadashi, devotees worship Lord Vishnu with great devotion and chant his name or his mantra throughout the day.

Devotees observe a strict fast which is broken on the next day, i.e., on dwadashi day during the parana time. Those who are unable to keep a whole day fast keep a partial fast by consuming fruits and milk and avoid eating rice and other grains for the whole day.

Saphala Ekadashi Mantra :

You can chant any one of these Vishnu Mantra and Slokas on this auspicious day of Saphala Ekadashi – Om Namo Bhagavate Vaasudevaaya Mantra, Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram or Vishnu Ashtottaram.
