About Papmochani Ekadashi :
Papmochani Ekadashi is a Hindu holy day celebrated on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon phase) in the Hindu Calendar month Falgun or Chaitra (as per North Indian Calendar) which in the Gregorian calendar falls in March or April.
Papmochani Ekadashi is a highly auspicious day dedicated to worship of Lord Vishnu to get rid of all your sins.
The name of the Ekadashi, “Papmochani” itself means redemption of sins.
Papmochani Ekadashi Story / Vrat Katha :
According to legends, once upon a time there was a sage named Medhavi who did his tapasya (meditation) in chaitaratha forest. He was an adherent devotee of Lord Shiva. He was well know for his meditation practices, which could not be interrupted even after alluring distractions. However an apsara (angel) named Manju Ghosha was successful in luring the sage and eventually they married each other.
After years of married life, apsara Manju Ghosha told the safe that she wanted to return to devaloka (heaven) from where she had come. The sage refused to let her go, but she disobeyed the sage and went away. Getting angry on this, the sage cursed her and turned her into a witch.
Soon the sage felt that he had done a wrong deed by cursing the apsara. So he gave her a solution that she would be relieved from the curse and would regain her human body only after she performed Papmochani Ekadashi vrata.
The sage himself felt guilty of having committed a sin of falling into the trap of apsara Manju Ghosha and on advice of his father sage Chyavana, even sage Medhavi performed the Papmochani Ekadashi vrata to get rid of his sins and the guilt associated with it.
It is believed that apsara Manju Ghosha religiously performed the Papmochani Ekadashi vrata and regained her human form and since then devotees have been performing the Papmochani Ekadashi vrata to get rid of their sins and guilt’s associated with it.
