Papankusha Ekadashi 2017
About Papankusha Ekadashi :
Papankusha Ekadashi is a Hindu holy day celebrated on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon phase) in the Hindu Calendar month Ashwina which in the Gregorian calendar falls in September or October.
As the name itself indicates, Papankusha Ekadashi is a highly auspicious day dedicated to worship of Lord Vishnu – Shri Hari to get rid of all your sins.
Describing this Ekadashi, Lord Krishna says to Yudhishthira, that by observing the fast of Papankusha Ekadashi you can help ten generations of ancestors on your mother’s side, your father’s side and your wife’s side to get rid of their sins and attain moksha.
Papankusha Ekadashi Story / Vrat Katha :
According to legends, once upon a time there lived a very cruel hunter named Krodhana near the Vindhyachal Mountains. Throughout his lifetime he performed all wicked deeds.
At the end of his life, Yamraj ordered his representative to bring the hunter to his court.
When Krodhana came to know that he would soon die, he got extremely scared and approached a sage named Angira and pleaded him for help.
Sage Angira advised him to worship Lord Vishnu on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashvin Masa – known as Papankusha Ekadashi to get rid of all his sins.
Krodhana observed the Papankusha Ekadashi’s fast before his death and hence his soul was taken to heaven and he attained salvation at the feet of Lord Vishnu.
Since then people have been observing Papankusha Ekadashi vrata with great devotion and dedication to ord Vishnu.
Papankusha Ekadashi Puja Vidhi :
The Puja Vidhi performed during Papankusha Ekadashi is similar to that followed during other Ekadashi’s.
On the day of Papankusha Ekadashi, devotees worship Lord Vishnu with great devotion and chant his name or his mantra throughout the day.
Devotees observe a strict fast which is broken on the next day, i.e., on dwadashi day during the parana time. Those who are unable to keep a whole day fast keep a partial fast by consuming fruits and milk and avoid eating rice and other grains for the whole day.
Papankusha Ekadashi Mantra :
