Nirjala Ekadashi

About Nirjala Ekadashi :

Nirjala Ekadashi also known as Pandava Ekadashi or Bhima Ekadashi is a Hindu holy day celebrated on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon phase) in the Hindu Calendar month Jyeshta which in the Gregorian calendar falls in May or June.

Among all the 24 Ekadashi’s that fall in a Hindu calendar year, the Nirjala Ekadashi is the most important and significant one. It is believed that a person who observes Nirjala Ekadashi fast gets the benefits of all the 24 Ekadashi’s that occur in a year.

However, the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi is very strict as the devotee is required to fast without consuming water or any type of food item.

Devotees who observe the Nirjala Ekadashi vrata, are able to get rid of their sins and attain great happiness, prosperity and longevity.

Those who are not able to follow the other twenty four Ekadashi’s of a year, should at least try and observe the Nirjala Ekadashi fast, to get benefits of fast for all twenty four Ekadashi’s.

Nirjala Ekadashi Story / Vrat Katha :

According to legends, except, Bhima, remaining four Pandava’s – Yudhisthir, Arjuna, Nakul and Sahadev, along with their wife, Draupadi and mother Kunti used to observe fast on all the 24 ekadashi’s in a year. Even Bhim wanted to keep fast on all the ekadashi’s but being unable to conrol his hunger, Bhim could never manage to keep ekadashi fast.

He always used to feel that by not keeping the Ekadashi fast, he might be dishonoring Lord Vishnu. He once approached sage Vyasa to find a solution for his problem.

Sage Vyasa advised Bhim to observe a strict fast on Nirjala Ekadashi day, once a year to get the benefit of all the 24 Ekadashi’s of the year.

Bhim observed the strict fast, but on the morning of the next day he became unconscious and came back to consciousness after he was offered Ganga water with Tulsi leaf.

Since then people have been observing Nirjala Ekadashi fast.

Nirjala Ekadashi Puja Vidhi :

The Puja Vidhi performed during Nirjala Ekadashi is similar to that followed during other Ekadashi’s.

Devotees of Lord Vishnu observe a strict fast which is broken on the next day during the parana time. During this fast, devotees cannot consume any type of food like fruits and milk that can be consumed in other Ekadashi’s. In fact devotees have to observe this fast without consuming water as well.

During Nirjala Ekadashi, devotees worship Lord Vishnu and offer Lord fruits, Tulsi leaves and sweets.

Nirjala Ekadashi Mantra :

On the auspicious day of Nirjala Ekadashi, devotees can chant any of these Vishnu Mantra and Slokas on this auspicious day – Om Namo Bhagavate Vaasudevaaya Mantra, Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram or Vishnu Ashtottaram.
