Mokshada Ekadashi 2017

Mokshada Ekadashi

About Mokshada Ekadashi :

Mokshada Ekadashi is a Hindu holy day celebrated on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon phase) in the Hindu Calendar month Margashirsha which in the Gregorian calendar falls in November or December.

As the name itself indicates, Mokshada Ekadashi is a highly auspicious day dedicated to worship of Lord Vishnu – Shri Hari to get rid of all your sins and to achieve liberation (moksha).

Just like the case of Indira Ekadashi, keeping fast on Mokshada Ekadashi not only helps you but also helps your forefathers to get rid of their sins.

This day is also celebrated as Gija Jayanti – the day on which Lord Krishna gave the hold sermon of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna before the beginning of the Mahabharata War.

Mokshada Ekadashi Story / Vrat Katha :

According to legends, once upon a time there was a King named Vaikhanasa who ruled the city of Champakanagar. He was a noble king and treated his subjects as if they were his children.

One night, while sleeping, King Vaikhanasa had a dream that his father was in hell (naraka) ruled by Yamaraj, the god of death. The King found himself very helpless as he could do nothing to help his father, despite of the fact that he was very powerful and rich.

Next Day, the King called his council of ministers and sought their advice for freeing this father from tortures of Hell and grant him moksha (liberation).

On advice of the council, King approached Parvata Muni, an omniscient sage who had knowledge of past, present and future. King told the sage about his dream and asked for a solution.

The sage meditated and found the reason for King’s father’s sufferings in hell. The sage said to the King, “Your father is in hell because he committed the sin of quarrelling with his wife and having coitus with her in her menstrual cycle, in spite of her strong protests.”

Later the sage gave king the solution to free his father from all those sins so that he can achieve liberation. The sage suggested King to observe a fast on Mokshada Ekadashi.

King Vaikhanasa along with his wife and children observed the Mokshada Ekadashi vrata and worshipped Lord Vishnu with great devotion.

Lord Vishnu got pleased and Kings father was released from heaven and was taken on Garuda to Heaven – the adobe of Lord Vishnu.

Since then people of the region started observing Mokshada Ekadashi Vrata with great devotion.
