Mohini Ekadashi in 2017, 2018
About Mohini Ekadashi :
Mohini Ekadashi is a Hindu holy day celebrated on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon phase) in the Hindu Calendar month Vaisakha which in the Gregorian calendar falls in April or May.
This Ekadashi is dedicated to “Mohini” – the only female avatar of Lord Vishnu, who first appeared on this Ekadashi day.
Devotees who observe the Mohini Ekadashi vrata, are able to get rid of their sins.
The benefits obtained by performing Mohini Ekadashi Vrata are equal to the benefits received by visiting pilgrimages, offering charity and ever performing 100 yagna’s.
In fact, even Lord Rama had observed Mohini Ekadashi fast to get rid of all his sins and sorrows.
Mohini Ekadashi Story / Vrat Katha :
According to legends, once upon a time there was a King named Dyutiman who ruled the city of Bhadravati, situated on the banks of the river Saraswati. He had five sons – Sumana, Dyutiman, Medhavi, Sukriti and Dhrishthabuddhi.
Except, Dhrishthabuddhi, all other sons of the king were obedient and noble like him. Dhrishthabuddhi on other hand was always engaged in great sinful activities like illicit sex, consuming excessive alcohol, gambling, etc.
He was many times punished by the king and was eventually expelled out of the kingdom.
Poor Dhrishthabuddhi wandered here and there in the forest and started killings birds and animals to feed himself.
Once day he accidentally came across the ashram of sage Kaundinya.
Sage Kaundinya had just returned from his holy bath in the river Ganges and water droplets were falling from his clothes. Dhrishthabuddhi touched some of the droplets of this holy water and soon he was freed of his ignorance and his sinful reactions were greatly reduced.
Dhrishthabuddhi soon joined both his hands and prayed to sage Kaundinya and asked him for a solution to get rid of all the sins he has performed in his lifetime.
Sage suggested him to observe the Mohini Ekadashi Vrata, which he observed religiously.
Afterwards, he was freed of all his sins and eventually rode upon Garuda, the carrier of Lord Vishnu, to visit Lord VIshnu.
This story of Mohini Ekadashi was narrated by sage Vasishtha to Lord Rama, when he wanted to get rid of all his sins and sorrows. In fact on suggestion of sage Vasishtha, even Lord Rama had observed Mohini Ekadashi Vrata.
Mohini Ekadashi Puja Vidhi :
