Jaya Ekadashi

About Jaya Ekadashi :

Jaya Ekadashi also known as Bhisma Ekadashi or Bhaimi Ekadasi is a Hindu holy day celebrated on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon phase) in the Hindu Calendar month Magh which in the Gregorian calendar falls in January or February.

Jaya Ekadashi is a highly auspicious day dedicated to worship of Lord Vishnu to ensure that you get rid of all your sins and can attain Moksha (salvation or liberation) after death.

Along with Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva is also worshipped on Jaya Ekadashi.

Jaya Ekadashi Story / Vrat Katha :

According to legends, Bhishma – the grand uncle of both Pandavas and Kauravas, chose the period of Jaya Ekadashi to relieve his body and rise for the heavenly abode with the Supreme Soul (Brahman).

But before that, while lying on bed of arrows after the war of Mahabharata, he revealed the Sahasranama Stothram or Vishnu Stothram to Pandavas in the presence of Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Hence, this day is highly auspicious in the Hindu mythology.

Jaya Ekadashi Puja Vidhi :

The Puja Vidhi performed during Jaya Ekadashi is similar to that followed during other Ekadashi’s. On this day people observe a strict fast which is broken on the next day during the parana time. Those who are unable to keep a whole day fast keep a partial fast consuming fruits and milk and avoid eating rice and other grains for the whole day.

Apart from worshipping Lord Vishnu, people also worship Lord Shiva on this day.

Chanting of Vishnu Sahastranaam on this Ekadashi is considered highly auspicious and it is believed that person who chants this mantra on Jaya Ekadashi with great devotion achieves Moksha after death.

On this day, special Puja’s are also performed dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva in various temple.

Jaya Ekadashi Mantra :

You can chant any one of these Vishnu Mantra and Slokas on this auspicious day of Jaya Ekadashi – Om Namo Bhagavate Vaasudevaaya Mantra, Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram or Vishnu Ashtottaram.

You may also chant Lord Shiva’s Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra on this day.
