Indira Ekadashi Story / Vrat Katha :

According to legends, during satyuga there was a king named Indrasena who was rue of Mahishmatipuri. He was a noble king who took good care of people in his kingdom. He was also a adherent devotee of Lord Vishnu.

Once day Narad Muni came from heaven to Indrasena’s kingdom and described the pity condition of Indrasena’s father who after his death resides in Yamaraj’s kingdom in hell because of his past sin of prematurely breaking an Ekadashi fast. Narad Muni further said that his father had given a message for his son which said that his son Indrasena should observe a fast on coming Indira Ekadashi and give much in charity so that his father is able to get rid of his sins and can go upward to heaven.

Narad Muni then explained King Indrasena how to observe the Indira Ekadashi fast. The King observed the fast as described by Narad Muni and next day when he broke his fast, he saw flowers falling from sky towards him.

King Indrasena also saw his father rising towards the adobe of Lord Vishnu sitting on his vahana Garuda.

King Indrasena also got merits of the Indira Ekadashi vrata and he continued to rule his kingdom without any obstacles.

Since then, people of the region started observing Indira Ekadashi Vrata with great devotion.
