About Amalaki Ekadashi :
Amalaki Ekadashi also known as Amalaka Ekadashi is a Hindu holy day celebrated on the 11th lunar day (Ekadashi Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon phase) in the Hindu Calendar month Phalgun which in the Gregorian calendar falls in February or March.
Amalaki Ekadashi is a highly auspicious day dedicated to worship of Lord Vishnu to ensure that you get rid of all your sins.
On Amalaki Ekadashi, Amla tree (Indian gooseberry tree) is worshipped as it is believed that Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi reside in this tree.
Amalaki Ekadashi being celebrated 4 or 5 days before Holi, this day marks the beginning of the festivities related to Holi.
Amalaki Ekadashi Story / Vrat Katha :
According to legends, once upon a time, there was a King named Chitrasena who had observed Amalaki Ekadashi fast and had worshipped the Amla tree.
Sometime later, King Chitrasena along with his followers went for hunting where they were captured by a group of asuras (demons). On seeing more and more tribals, the King fell unconscious and a divine power in the form of a light emerged from his body which destroyed all the attackers and them it vanished. On regaining consciousness King Chitrasena was surprised to see all the demons killed. Soon there was an Akasavani (divine voice from sky) which announced that King and his followers were protected due to observance of the Amalaki Ekadashi Vrata in past.
After this incidence, the Amalaki Ekadashi Vrata became popular in the kingdom.
Amalaki Ekadashi Puja Vidhi :
The Puja Vidhi performed during Amalaki Ekadashi is similar to that followed during other Ekadashi’s.
Devotees of Lord Vishnu observe a strict fast which is broken on the next day during the parana time. Those who are unable to keep a whole day fast keep a partial fast by consuming fruits and milk and avoid eating rice and other grains for the whole day.
The thing special about Amalaki Ekadashi is that people worship Amla tree on this Ekadashi day to get divine blessings of Lord Vishnu.
